Bathing in the herbal waters in Kutrallam, which is known for its healing powers has been until this day a yearly tradition followed by every Tamil household.
Kutrallam, in the South Podhigai Hills which is also called Agasthiyar Hills, in the Southern part of Tamil Nadu, has a history of several thousands of years. Many Siddhars like Sage Agasthiyar lived in this area. By Siddhars we mean ancient men who were saints, doctors, alchemists and mysitcs, all in one. Their findings were recorded in palm leaves and preserved. The writings were in ancient Tamil, in the form of poetry. These writings formed the Siddha system of medicine which has been in existence in Tamil Nadu for many centuries. This is considered the oldest Indian System of Medicine and is practised till this day.
Locating a particular herb in the wilderness can be a daunting task even to an expert. Agasthiyar who was the first Siddhar said that locating the herbs is an easier task from a state of heightened awareness. And that he was initiated into the art of locating herbs by a 'Gandharva Rishi'. The Gandharvas are semi-divine beings who are adept in magic and knowledgeable in all the 64 performing arts and skilled in warfare as well. Many of the herbs mentioned by the ancient Siddhars in their palm leaf manuscripts are found in Kutrallam.
I have in my experience found that in the 15th chapter of each person's Nadi reading (Palm Leaf Manuscripts, that carry the recordings of the lives of people by the ancient sages) there is a sure mention of a stipulated period of bathing in the Kutrallam waterfall. And I can very well understand the reason behind why the waters in Kutrallam have been recommended to all by the sages. The rivers that feed these waterfalls flow thorough uninhabited forests filled with medicinal plants and herbs thereby accumulating the essence of these herbs. Bathing in these waterfalls is believed to cure all chronic aches and pains and is refreshing and rejuvenating.
